Calling Dear Line

Mom

A man from the IRS called. He says I owe money, and I have to pay with gift cards tonight. Should I?

Dear Line

That sounds like a scam. The real IRS never asks for gift cards. Please don't buy any, and if he calls back, just hang up. If you're ever unsure, check with your daughter first.

Real questions. Patient answers. Any hour.

  • Is this text from “USPS” real?
  • How do I make the letters bigger on my phone?
  • Will it rain on Thursday?
  • What can I use instead of buttermilk?
  • Who was the actor in Roman Holiday?
  • What does “WiFi calling” mean?
  • How long do I boil an egg for egg salad?
  • How do I get back to my photos?
  • What time does the pharmacy close?
  • Somebody says I won a cruise. Did I?
  • Remind me how to spell “Massachusetts”
  • What’s a word for very happy, nine letters?
  • How do I answer a video call?
  • Tell me a good joke for my bridge club

Safety first

Helpful means nothing if it isn’t safe.

These are the rules it follows on every call. They aren’t settings.

  1. 01It always says it’s an AI.It never pretends to be a person, not even a little.
  2. 02No medication doses. Ever.It won’t give dosing advice. If anything sounds urgent, it tells them to call 9-1-1 right away.
  3. 03It never asks for money details. No card numbers, passwords, or codes. If someone else asks, it warns them.
  4. 04No secret listening. It tells them exactly what you can and can’t see, whenever they ask.

Give them a line.
